As of today,
I have been writing So What If I Like Pretty Things for 4 years!

That is longer than I have ever stuck with anything in my entire life, if you don't count playing the violin (which you shouldn't count, because I have wise parents who forced me to keep going every time I wanted to quit). I'm proud that I've managed to keep this going. I try hard to allow SWIILPT to be whatever it wants to be - outfit posts,  inspiration pictures that make me happy, music, collaborations, even the occasional whiner-post if I need to let off steam. I love that it's flexible.  SWIILPT has also given me the opportunity to meet and work with some incredibly talented people, who I may have never encountered otherwise. I'm constantly reminded that the greatest inspiration I have is the magic in the people around me, and that's where I feel the blog may be moving next - I want to showcase the people who inspire me. In the coming months I will have interviews and features with some of the stylish, fascinating, wonderful people around me. I'm so excited about these new plans, and I hope to keep letting this blog grow, in any direction the universe blows it.

Wearing this around today - foolproof, fun, easy.

Playlist - Hazy Spring.

Thursday, February 20, 2014

A new season calls for a new playlist!

Here are some things you should do while listening to this mix:
1) Roast marshmallows over a fire.
2) Ride in a tire swing.
3) Go to the beach (in a sweatshirt, not a bathing suit), dig your feet into the sand.
4) Make this drink, sip slowly.
5) Lie in the largest patch of grass you can find, close your eyes.

The sun came back out in Oakland and I plan to take total advantage over the next few days. Skirts without tights, afternoons hiking in the hills, kitchen windows open wide.

Curls.

Sunday, February 16, 2014

I have nothing new or revolutionary to add to the capital H Hair lexicon, and I can't claim an academic understanding of all of the layers in the discussion - all I have to bring to the table is my own experience. There were times in my life I hated my hair, and fought against it, and did everything in my power to suppress it in some way or another. The reality of my hair - frizzy, curly, soft, unruly, entirely unpredictable - never felt normal. I've never actually met anyone who has hair exactly like mine, including my own sisters. I wanted it to either be completely straight or perfectly curly, and it is neither of those things, but the oddity of it contains a magic that I finally started to understand in the last few years. Any day of the week, it can look brand new. The possibility for experimentation is pretty much endless, save a few hot iron and perfectly sculpted tricks. The point is, after a lot of years I love my hair, strangeness and all, and lately I've been drawn to crazy curls and wide, afro-like frizz.

Now I'm considering a dye job, for the first time in my life . . . thinking of going a little blonde.

Off to make a mess in the kitchen and call it dinner.
Hope your weekend was beautiful.
