Mask, ears, fabric paint, felt, mask, pipe cleaners: Michael's
Sweatshirt: Ragstock
Tights & Shorts: American Apparel
Boots: Thrifted
Nailpolish: OPI "You Don't Know Jacques"

Happy Halloween dudes!
I dressed up as a fox.

Very low maintenance (although my felt belly did come off later in the evening...), easy to put together, completely comfortable, and I was able to dance my ass off in it!

What did you guys dress up as this weekend?
Or are you going out tonight?
I wanna know!

Wild Thing

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Jacket: Bagatelle
Top: Anthropologie
Skirt: gift, Macy's (thanks Mom)
Earrings: Claire's
Tights: HUE
Boots: Frye Jane

I haven't worn this one yet. I've been wanting to wear it for months, but I can't bear to waste a wild outfit on a tame night. I'm holding out for the perfect evening of madness.

A sane person might think,
"Woah lady. Leather boots, and a gold sequined skirt, and purple and green pleated corset top, and horribly unwashed hair?! YOU'RE A MESS!"

They'd be right, technically. But as I've stated, I don't really believe in dressing rules. I do, however, believe in dressing to your emotions and making mistakes.

Someday when I'm a grown-up, practical, effortlessly cooled-out lady I can look back on this one and laugh. For now though, I'll be as ridiculous as my young heart desires.

So, so much going on.

Oh, also, this is the first appearance of my new Fryes! They're a 1/2 size too small and I cannot get them off my feet without assistance (many thanks to Randall and Emma...), but they're starting to stretch and in a couple of weeks they should be perfect. Anybody know where I can buy some good stuff to waterproof them with?

And while you're at it, please enjoy my excellent Hey Arnold hair in the last photo.

Swiss Dots, Velvet, Lace, & Baubles

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Blazer: J Crew
Shirt: gift, Banana Republic (thanks Mom)
Necklace: gift, Macy's (thanks Mom)
Shorts: Anthropologie
Tights: Anthropologie
Shoes: Banana Republic
Lipstick: colorlab, "Rogue Wave" (thanks Marie)

Work + Drinks.
If I was gonna rename So What If I Like Pretty Things,
Work + Drinks would be perfectly fitting.

I felt like a proper, whimsical lady in this outfit. The mixing of colors and textures is where 80% of the delight in dressing lies for me. Pairing swiss dots AND lace AND shiny baubles AND velvet is just too much fun.

I can't give up these shorts even though it's cold: tights to the rescue! I just got these ones to replace my all-time favorite tights that are officially shot to hell (seen here on my recent MVP post, along with this equally bomb velvet blazer). The colored dots make them extra fun. You can buy em here if you like em!

This is what I want my hair to look like all the time.
It looks like this...maybe 1% of the time.

Okay guys, Halloween is this weekend -
I'm being a fox!
What are you being?!

This is the Remix

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Scarf: Anthropologie
Tank: Urban Outfitters
Button-down: Forever 21
Sweater: Ann Taylor
Pants: Joe's Visionaire
Shoes: gift, Ann Taylor (thanks Mom)
Necklace: gift, handmade by Blorange Dice (thanks Laura!)

I've worn two versions of this outfit in the past 5 days: this is a mash-up of both of them.

The original had the scarf, the remix had the heels & necklace.

I'm not even going to post how much I paid for the pants. An angry fashionable mob will come to my house and beat me with their wedge heels. But yeah, they're pretty great! I usually don't buy Joe's because they stretch so much, but these have held on.

The outfit is simple so the accessories do the heavy lifting here - a new scarfy-headband (I should patent that word), since I can't stop wearing scarfy-headbands, and a beautiful gem of a necklace made by the lovely Laura of Blorange Dice. The similar orange-y tones also balance the leopard print shoes.

I wore this working and drinking. And also shopping!
(I looked up my birthday in a fortune-telling birthday book yesterday and it said something about how I need to work and play equally hard, and be good at both. IT'S LIKE THEY ARE READING MY MIND!)

Hey guys, what are you gonna be for Halloween??
I just decided a couple of days ago and I can't wait!
Tell me!

Some Clothes That Don't Quite Fit

Friday, October 14, 2011

T shirt: Urban Outfitters
Sweater: Anthropologie
Scarf: Anthropologie
Jeans: Levi's
Necklace: Forever 21
Sunglasses: Anthropologie
Shoes: gift, Alfani (thanks Mom)
Jacket: Anthropologie
Bag: Anthropologie

Just bought this sweater a couple weeks ago. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but every time I put it on and look in the mirror, I have the same fleeting thought:
"...have I given up today?"

Guess wearing something THIS over-sized takes some getting used to.

I loved this sweater even when it was full price, but if you haven't figured it out yet, I am absurdly cheap for having such a ridiculously stuffed closet. $37 bucks seemed like a number I could get down with. Especially since the proverbial chill is now upon us, and I own like 2 sweaters. This one feels like a delicious blanket.

Speaking of oversized things, these jeans are a size too big. Like pretty much all the pants I own. And I really tried with these - I gave the Levi's Curve ID thing a try and found, surprise surprise, I am DIRECTLY between a Demi and a Bold, and neither really fit perfectly. I ended up buying the Demi, but gah. Will someone in the world pleeeeease make some pants that fit girls who got booty but cannot fill out Apple Bottoms?? ANYONE?!

My cork heart necklace broke (there were tears, wish I was kidding), so I bought this little gem to replace it. Cutesy, but not over the top.

Got the anorak for $10 - love it, but it's tough to find the right weather for it. Today's blustery 60 degrees was perfect. Though I have to admit, my forearms were freezing.

My mom got me these pretty little shoes for my birthday! Still breaking them in, so I have mad blisters, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Since October Summer had to end eventually (it was in the 80s and sunny for a 7 consecutive days in Chicago last week), I suppose this is the kind of outfit I'll be wearing all the time now! Layered, big, comfortable.

What are you guys wearing as fall sneaks in?
What are you eating and drinking?

Tell me everything!

An American Girl Playing French

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Top: The Limited
Skirt: Urban Outfitters
Earrings: thrifted, gift (thanks Heather)
Lipstick: colorLab, "Rogue Wave" (thanks Marie)
Shoes: thrifted
Purse: gift, Kate Spade (thanks Mai)

Look guys! I'm levitating!

I've worn variations on this ensemble during the past month. Sometimes lipstick, sometimes none. Sometimes loafers, sometimes bow flats. Sometimes Kate Spade bag, sometimes quilted black shoulder bag. Sometimes crazy curls, sometimes side braid.

Whatever the components, this combo is a barely veiled game of dress-up. Tres chic, oui?

Chic French women (okay, all French women) never seem to look fussy, so no part of this outfit could be fussy. It's made primarily of two pieces that have really great movement - check the first photo for evidence. The whole thing looks much better in motion than it does in still photos.

These shoes pinch my feet. But I LOVE them.
(Someone get the quote...please...!)

I wish I could stop being so pigeon-toed.

Oh, and the earrings! They sort of freakishly resemble Kate Middleton's engagement ring...but anyway, they were a 2010 birthday gift from my darling friend Heather.

Also, just a reminder, I am now
If you comment on the old address, my blog with gobble it up and it'll be lost forever!

Another Era

Friday, October 07, 2011

Headbandy-scarf: Forever 21
Shirt: gift, Banana Repulic Mad Men Collection (thanks Mom)
Belt: ...no idea...
Bag: Anthropologie
Cardigan: J Crew
Pants: Banana Republic
Shoes: thrifted, Seychelles
Earrings: thrifted, gift (thanks Emma)

Wore this two days in a row.
Day 1: Photo taking downtown, drinks at the Roof.
Day 2: Teaching violin!

Though most of my clothes aren't vintage, a lot of outfits I wear feel like jumbles of other eras. This one felt a little fifties (lacey shell), a little sixties (black skinny pants), and a little seventies (headscarf).

Ohhh these pants. Can't sing their praises enough. (They were already marked as an MVP.)

You can sort of see my new short hair here...what do you think, friends?? I think I wanna go shorter next time I go...

My mom got me this lace number for my birthday. The fit is weird; it curves way away from your body at the bottom, and is more high-necked than anything I'd ordinarily wear, but I adore it. It makes me feel like a lady! And I thought the beaded cardigan over it was a cool contrast in pattern/texture/color.

Cheers to loving an outfit so much you wear it twice in a row!

The maxi joke was on me

Shirt: Forever 21
Dress (worn as skirt): TJ Maxx
Belt: gift, Ann Taylor (thanks Mom)
Ring: gift, Ann Taylor (thanks Mom)
Earrings: Claire's (clip-ons from 11th grade!)

Quick outfit post - I'm hoping to get a lot of boring but essential stuff dealt with today so I need to be out of my apartment, well, about an hour ago.

I wore this to work a couple of days ago (plus a leather jacket + top knot, you know how we do)

Found this maxi dress at a TJMaxx in Michigan with my Mom 4 years ago. I remember seeing a sale rack of maxis and thinking, "Oh, how hilarious, look at these silly long skirts people keep insisting are cool that are horribly ugly. I'll try one on for fun and we'll have a giggle. Look, it only costs $4! HIL-AAA-RIOUS!"

Uh yeah. 20 minutes later I bought it.

I will NEVER understand people who hate holidays, I will especially never understand people who hate birthdays.

Here are the excuses for hating birthdays I hear most often:

1 - I'm getting old, life is passing me by, my birthday is a reminder
2 - The expectations are so high
3 - Too much attention is on me and I didn't do anything to deserve it

And here is why they are all DUMB:

1 - Birthdays are not meant to be reminders of mortality - they're an excuse for you to throw a party and do whatever you want all day to distract yourself from impending old age. Celebrate where you are right now.

2 - You create your own expectations. If your wish is to sit on your couch watching romcoms and eating fried food with your best friend (hello, birthday 17), that is perfect. If you wish to drink a hundred mixed drinks out of fishbowls, then finish your homework while drunk that night (hello birthday 21), that is perfect. If you wish to throw a ridiculous hotel party and force your friends to dress all in black/white/costume jewelry, then go swimming and have an enormous pajama dance party (cough cough birthday 22), that is perfect. If your wish is to sit in solitude to reflect on how lucky you are, that is perfect (haven't had this one yet, ha).

3 - It's your birthday damnit, let people be nice to you!

Okay. Rant over. This is what I wore for my 24th birthday party :) I didn't mean to dress up like a stupid girly princess, but hey. So What If I Like Pretty Things, right?!

When I left my house, all of the gems on the toes were there. The fact that a bunch are missing is simply the sign of a good party, right?

The closeup lets you see how terribly I applied these fabulous nails, but human error aside, they're bomb. I want them in every single color.

Finding a dress came down to the wire, but this little H&M number stole my heart. I told myself that if I bought a girly dress I'd be sure to tough it up. When I bought the dress I was envisioning black back-seamed tights, leather shoes, stick-straight hair, heavy makeup and jewelry...and somehow, I ended up looking like a Disney Princess. (Seriously, several people at the bar told me I looked like Cinderella.)

So, I have this friend. Her name is Mai, and she is dear and wonderful, and totally insane. And sometime she does crazy things, like BUY YOU A GORGEOUS KATE SPADE BAG FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY. So when that happens, you call her and sputter incoherently for like 10 minutes. And then you hang up, and surprise, it's not a dream, it's still sitting on your bed. And all you can do is sort of stare at it in disbelief. And then you put it on, and realize you'll probably never take it off again.

In closing, I had a perfect birthday. So full of gratitude for everybody and everything. For my family, for my friends, for my stupidly charmed life.
