[Birthday #1, 1988]

but if there's anything I know,
it's that age ain't nothin' but a number.
(Thanks for the life lessons, Aaliyah.)

Here's what I wore yesterday, to work/drinks/adventures.

Headbandy scarf: Forever 21
Shirt: Old Navy
Cardigan: J Crew
Pants: Banana Republic
Belt: absolutely no idea...
Shoes: Lela Rose for Payless

I'm obsessed with headscarves lately. Does it show? (Exhibit A, Exhibit B...) They make even the worst hair days look good. Speaking of hair, I GOT MINE CUT - and I love it! You can't tell in this photo, but it's about 3 inches shorter now. I'm working up the courage to go waayyyyyy short...

Button-down shirts never stay tucked into pants on me - I guess I move around too much. My only solution is to tie them in a knot, luckily it's a solution that happens to look awesome. I've already spoken of my love for tied-up oversized button-downs on SWIILPT, but it bears repeating: there is NOTHING as sexy as undone formality. At least in my head.

My agenda today includes:
fall stroll,
absurd amounts of sprinkled baked goods,
and a perfect birthday dress (photos to come!)
Say hi!

Also, pop over to Blorange Dice to check out Laura's beautiful disposable camera photos of Chicago, and a couple of our little thrifting adventure :)

Happy Friday, Happy Weekend!

Playlist: Sigh. 2

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Sooo, when this blog was born it was equal parts music and style. And like a perfect mirror to my life, it's been style heavy/music-lacking lately. In an effort to correct the imbalance, I present to you a mix made with love, care, and yes, PLENTY of sighing.

It's the sequel to a mix I made last fall (on SWIILPT here) that is still my go-to, for all seasons and moods. To grab Sigh One, go to this link.

Sigh, 2.

School is in Session

Blazer: Forever 21
Shirt: gift, Banana Republic (thanks Mom)
Skirt: Urban Outfitters
Headband: Forever 21
Earrings: vintage, from Seek
Scarf: Anthropologie
Purse: Anthropologie
Shoes: Payless
Nailpolish: Essie, "Licorice" and "Borrowed & Blue"
Lipstick: Clinique Different Lipstick, "Spiced Apple"

Another Pretending-I'm-A-Student outfit. Guess who misses school.........
I wore this to work and drinks yesterday.

The earrings were the starter for the whole outfit - I found them on my thrifting adventure with Laura earlier this month. I wanted to wear them with something formal, but with lots of pattern so it didn't feel stodgy. Hence the floral/orange/pom-pom-y scarf and headband.

Oh the blazer. I adore it, but the more I look at it,
the more I see a Hilton Hotel bellhop.
Oh well! Bellhop chic it is.

I never had to wear a uniform past age 7 despite attending Catholic school for several more years, but we did have an absurdly strict dress code that I took great delight in violating. (I was personally responsible for new legislation forbidding the wearing of tiaras - no joke.) Though I would have hated wearing one then, a uniform sounds like a dreamy time-saver to me now...

Underneath the layers this outfit is made of two simple cotton pieces. An old Banana Republic t-shirt my Mom passed down to me (in a perfect color and cut, surprise surprise, my mom wins again), and the Urban Outfitters skirt I just bought that's already been on the blog here and here.

I won't bore you with the details but let's just say I've been lusting after this purse for at least a few months. I finally bought it (at about a fifth of its original price) last week, and I kid you not: I wore it around my house while cleaning a couple of days ago.

Thanks to the lovelies who have come to say hey on twitter!
I'm here:

I'm off for the day,
salut, friends!

And so the layering begins...

Dress, worn as top: J Crew
Jacket: Anthropologie
Skirt: Urban Outfitters
Necklace: J Crew
Shoes: thrifted, Seychelles
Lipstick: Revlon Colorstay, "Stay Currant"

This outfit took me on a rainy morning stroll last week. For some reason I felt like IT was wearing ME, which doesn't usually happen. (Perhaps it's because everyone else I saw in the park was wearing Reeboks and yoga pants.) But it was cozy and adorable paired with my giant clear umbrella.

This J Crew dress has been such a headache. It's way too short to ever wear, and I should've returned it , but I love the pattern and color so much that I could never bring myself to do it. Lately I've worn it as a shirt (also seen here), which works alright. A few awkward adjustments have to be made over the course of a day, but eh. It's the best I can do!

C3PO shoes, one of my best thrifts ever. I want to write them a sonnet of love.

So, I'm at a new URL!

And I now have a twitter.
Come say hey. I like making new friends.

Also, my birthday is coming soon and I need dress suggestions!! Any ideas??

Happy Monday, guys!

One last summer dress

Friday, September 16, 2011

Lipstick: colorlab, "Rogue Wave" (thanks Marie)
Dress: Anthropologie
Flower belt: J Crew
Bracelets: Orchid Lane, gift (thanks Bizzy), Forever 21, H&M, stolen from sisters
Shoes: Steve Madden via DSW

It's 50 degrees. I slept in my robe and leggings and I was still freezing. While I've been eagerly anticipating sweater weather, losing summer always bums me out, so here's one last summer dress I've been wearing for months, but have forgotten to post!

Got this belt years ago and I find it really tough to wear - it's only been on the blog one other time, in one of my very first outfit posts, WAY back here. It never works on anything with belt loops, and it definitely won't stay put on top of skirts. Even though I can only wear it around my waist, its still lovely to look at and I will keep trying to find ways to use it!

A gaggle of bracelets from a gaggle of sources.

The best part of this dress is the way it moves. It's made of that ever-so-delightful Tracey Reese fabric that is ridiculously elastic and responsive to movement, so every step you take causes it to bounce and twirl.

I guess the second best part would be that I got it for $19.95. HOLLLLLER!

Farewell, summertime.
Hello coziness!

(On that note, I will be making a Part. II to my mix Sigh. from last fall - I guess you guys liked it, because it remains in my top 5 most viewed pages to this day! Hope the next will be as good, will try my hardest!)

My new address:

Finally cowboyed up and did it. It'll be bumpy for the first few days trying to get everything switched over, but I promise I'm working on it!

Dad's Hand-Me-Downs

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

I had the distinct pleasure of hanging out with the lovely, hilarious Laura from Blorange Dice this weekend! She was in visiting Chicago from the south, and we decided to meet for some thrifting (Kokorokoko, Seek) and wine (Lush). As if there were ever a doubt, she is just as fantastic and warm as you could ever imagine! Unfortunately I am totally dumb and forgot the batteries for my camera, so you'll just have to take my word for it - she is fabulous.

Now, for an outfit!

wait for it...
my DAD!

Shirt: Urban Outfitters
Vest: gift (thanks Dad), menswear shop in Toronto
Belt: gift (thanks Mom), Ann Taylor
Skirt: Urban Outfitters
Lipstick: Revlon Colorstay, "Stay Currant"
Shoes: gift (thanks Mom), Ann Taylor

This is what I wore on a brief shopping journey last week, on one of the delightfully chilly afternoons I had off. I was looking for records and old furniture.

My Dad, an incredibly stylish man, had this vest custom made as part of a full sea foam green suit for his wedding to my mother in the 70s. It was at a small shop in Toronto he frequented. He's a very tall skinny dude, and a few years ago when he offered me the vest I was thrilled beyond belief when it fit.

The skirt is my FAVORITE skirt shape - drapey, short, a-line, twirly...The vest was overpowering it in the beginning, but I added a boldly patterened button-down and a punchy printed belt to break it up and soften up the stark contrast between stiff/sea foam green, and flowy/navy.

I thought doing a matchy-matchy belt/shoe combination to bring some cohesion - it seems to work.

Good Tuesday, friends!
