A note about selling retail: You are nameless.

It doesn't matter if you make eye contact, shake hands, spend an hour with a client, say your name four thousand different times. When the time comes for sale-credit to be given, your name will be forgotten, and your sale will often be lost.

This happens to me a lot, and it's endlessly frustrating, so I'm doing everything in my power to fight it. Most recently, I've resolved to only wear clothes in insane colors and strange fabrics. I needed to shop, since 90% of my wardrobe is black/white/brown. And I'm happy to say, I found an incredible gem that is fast ascending the list of my favorite dresses. This little yellow frock has already worked wonders, and I've only had it a week. It's Laundry by Shelli Segal, but I found it in a second-hand shop. I'd guess it retailed around $250, and I snatched it up for $22 even. (That's the other thing about working retail - your wardrobe dreams are WAY bigger than your budget, so you have to make due.) It's comfortable and adorable, and certainly an eye-catcher. Because I bought it second-hand the fit was a bit of an issue - it's two sizes too big - but I added my own vintage brown leather belt to cinch the waist and it pretty much solved the problem.

In terms of accessories, I originally assumed I'd go with neutrals. But then I sort of felt like I needed to go with the theme - pair the lemonade dress with some fruit punch shoes and a mint julep necklace.
I picked up the necklace at Francesca's on Southport - a store I've always been on the fence about for the simple fact that I feel utterly overwhelmed when I walk in, but this necklace won me over. It was $40, and definitely worth it. The shoes are Nine West, a gift from my extremely fashionable mother a couple years ago.

All in all, it's turned out to be a great investment and people have been remembering me more clearly. And when they don't get my name, at least they can say the girl in the yellow dress. (Though you'd be amazed at how many people have said the girl in the green dress or the girl in the orange dress. Sigh.)
